Python Engineer (Backend + AI)

We are looking for a Middle+ / Senior Python Engineer to join a long-term project for a US-based technology company.

The team is developing a modern cloud-native enterprise platform for the aviation industry that supports business-critical workflows, data management, and operational processes for organizations operating in a highly regulated environment.

About the Role

We’re looking for a strong Python Backend Engineer who can independently own backend tasks and contribute to AI-related functionality.

The main focus is Python backend development, APIs, integrations, authentication and authorization, databases, and existing codebase development. Around 30% of the work may involve AI/LLM-related tasks. Deep ML expertise is not required: we’re looking for a strong backend engineer with practical AI experience and an interest in developing further in this area.

Responsibilities

• Develop and enhance backend services using Python and FastAPI.
• Design, develop, and maintain REST APIs.
• Build integrations with internal and external services.
• Work with authentication and authorization mechanisms.
• Work with relational databases, data access layers, and search technologies.
• Debug, maintain, and improve an existing codebase.
• Take ownership of tasks from requirements clarification through implementation and release.
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering quality.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and client-side stakeholders.
• Contribute to AI/LLM-related functionality and AI integrations.
• Research possible solutions, build PoCs when needed, demonstrate results, gather feedback, and iterate.
• Occasionally make small changes outside the core Python stack when required by product integrations.

Requirements

• 4+ years of commercial software development experience with strong Python expertise.
• Solid backend development experience.
• Hands-on experience with FastAPI or similar Python backend frameworks.
• Strong experience designing and developing REST APIs.
• Experience integrating third-party and internal services.
• Good understanding of authentication and authorization.
• Experience with relational databases and SQL.
• Experience working with existing codebases, debugging, and improving code written by others.
• Practical experience with AI, LLMs, AI APIs, or AI-powered product functionality. Deep ML expertise is not required.
• Understanding of Git and CI/CD processes.
• Ability to independently drive tasks from requirements to production.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with changing priorities and high-level requirements.
• Proactive mindset, ownership, and willingness to suggest solutions rather than wait for detailed instructions.
• Upper-Intermediate English (B2) or higher for regular communication with an international team and client.

Nice to Have

• Experience with LangChain or similar LLM frameworks.
• Experience with OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, or other AI APIs.
• Experience with RAG, embeddings, vector databases, or semantic search.
• Experience with MariaDB.
• Experience with Solr or similar search/indexing technologies.
• Experience with SQLAlchemy and Alembic.
• Experience with Docker and AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience with microservice architectures.
• Basic JavaScript or frontend knowledge.
• Basic Java experience.
• Interest or previous experience in mentoring engineers, conducting technical interviews, or helping colleagues prepare for client interviews.
• Experience working in product or startup-like environments with evolving requirements.
