GPT: GUID Partition Table

GPT or GUID Partition Table is a disk partitioning scheme commonly used in modern computer systems. It is a standard layout format that allows the operating system to recognize and manage the different partitions on a hard drive or solid-state drive (SSD).

Overview

The GUID Partition Table, abbreviated as GPT, originated as part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) specification. UEFI replaced the legacy BiOS (Basic Input/Output System) firmware interface and introduced GPT as the new standard for disk partitioning. GPT is designed to overcome the limitations of the older Master Boot Record (MBR) partitioning scheme, which had several restrictions, including a maximum limit of four primary partitions and a 2.2 terabyte disk size limit.

Advantages

GPT offers a range of advantages over traditional MBR partitioning. Firstly, GPT supports disks larger than 2.2 terabytes, making it ideal for modern high-capacity storage devices. This allows users to leverage the full capacity of large hard drives, ensuring efficient utilization of storage resources.

Moreover, GPT allows the creation of up to 128 primary partitions, compared to the MBR limit of only four. This increased partitioning flexibility enables users to create multiple partitions for different operating systems, data storage, or other purposes, without being constrained by arbitrary limits.

Additionally, GPT incorporates redundancy by storing a backup copy of the partition table at the end of the disk. This redundancy minimizes the risk of data loss or corruption caused by disk failures or accidental damage to the primary partition table.

Another notable advantage of GPT is its support for the universally unique identifier (UUID) system, denoted as GUID (Globally Unique Identifier). Each GPT partition is assigned a unique GUID, which helps prevent conflicts between partitions and facilitates easy identification and management.

Applications

The GPT partitioning scheme is widely used in various applications within the information technology sector. It is predominantly utilized in operating systems that support UEFI, such as Windows 10, macOS, Linux, and other modern UNIX-like systems.
