Design for Emergency Mobile App for Ambulance Call

Leverage Itexus profound expertise to create a strong design solution for your business

Description

The ultimate goal of the project was to create a life-saving emergency app to enable users to get help when one’s life is at stake and every second counts. In this case study, we focus on the design aspects of the project and reveal how our Design Team’s expertise helped to reconcile conflicting requirements and create an effective user-centered design.

Project scope

The objective was to create a set of screens for Android and iOS applications including some options for various smartphone screen resolutions. The client also wanted to test their hypothesis using focus groups so our designers needed to create interactive prototypes. Besides, our Design Team also suggested and implemented animations for the emergency care manual. The subsequent research ascertained that these animations improved user onboarding and made the app more user-friendly.

Highlights

Discovery

At the outset of the project, the Design Team in collaboration with the Business Analyst initiated the analysis phase. At that phase, the team analyzed the client’s request and explored the target audience, legal requirements and regulations for such applications, best practices in the market, and loads of non-functional requirements. Based on the analysis results, the Design Team had drawn a set of assumptions that formed the basis for further work on the app’s design.

Implementation

The Design Team worked in short iterations, following the Lean approach and delivering the designed features according to business requirements and implementation plan. We had been designing solutions based on our design expertise, and the client validated them on each iteration. Through short iterations and the initial communication model with stakeholders, our Design Team minimized the time frame of the total project implementation and delivered it on time.

Launch and Maintenance

The Design Team participated in the UI kit creation, user scenarios writing, and the application logic documentation, and had been providing the Development Team with detailed information about the design solutions through the implementation process.

Project Design Challenges

The main challenge for our designers was to create a user interface that could combine several seemingly conflicting requirements. The app helps call an ambulance and get help in an extreme situation, but at the same time, it should be soothing and instilling confidence – help is on the way. The challenge was solved by the expert approach of our Design Team, and the solution was found at the cross-section of user testing data and customer requirements after several lean iterations.

Another challenge that our designers faced was a significant modification of the user flow caused by legal aspects and regulations. But the UI kit with reusable components created at the outset of the project enabled the Design Team to adapt to changes and deliver solutions on time without delaying the work of the Development Team.

Results

In 4 months, the team delivered the first working version of the app that met the client’s requirements, budget, and timeline. It allowed our client to launch user testing timely and encouraged the start of further marketing activities required by the client at this stage.

Currently, the Itexus team is working on the second version of the health emergency application with extra features and adapting the app for various gadgets such as smartwatches, smart home devices, etc.
